It's all slapped and you have to have a fretless 6 string bass. However you don't have to have a 6 string just as long as you can tune down to a B. The 2's and 3's aren't actually played 2nd fret, 3rd fret. You have to play them kind of close together or else it doesn't sound right, like I said you have to have a fretless. The 5's are distorted. Alright. I've played both of these tabs and after combining and trying them both I came up with something like this" Intro B|-15\1--0-1-0-1-3--0-1-0-1-3-----0-1-0-1-3--0-1-0-5*------0-1-0-1-5*-----| B|-0-1-0-1-3--0-1-0-1-15\1--1-| B|-0h2h3-0h2h3---(5)---0h2h3-0h2h3---5----| Main Riff E|---------------------0h2h3-------| B|-0h2h3-0h2h3-----------------| \=slide h=hammer on ( )=bend note *=heavy distortion

I discovered that no one really knows how to play the middle part of My Name is Mud, the part where he's singing. Here's how he does it. I saw him do this on HBO Reverb (kicked ass), and it boggled my mind. What he does is mute the strings either with the left hand or right arm to a certain extent, and then he slaps about 1/2 way to 3/4 of the way up the neck towards the nut. If you see it you'd understand in an instant.

After that its all muted till the chorus. Then you just basically play the same stuff, with some variations here and there.

Here is "My Name is Mud". I tabbed this on the 5 string in my school's band room after school one day. I know this isn't 100% correct, but after seeing Les on HBO, it's really, really easy to play. The muted part is really easy, once you see how he does it. Les uses a drumming technique through the whole song. It's a "double-sticking" pattern-- R, R, then L. I'll indicate which hand to hammer or slap with with R's and L's. Intro Solo: C|-------------------------|-----------------------0~~~x--| G|-------------------------|-----------------------0~~~x--| D|-------------------------|-----------------------0~~~x--| A|----------------------x--|-----------------------0~~~x--| E|-------2h3-3------3h4-x--|-------2h3-3------3h4--0~~~x--| B|--22h3-------22h3-----x--|--22h3-------22h3------0~~~x--| RR L R L R RR L R L RR L R L R RR L R L C:|-----------------------0~~~x--|---------------------------| G:|-----------------------0~~~x--|---------------------------| D:|-----------------------0~~~x--|---------------------------| A:|-----------------------0~~~x--|---------------------------| E:|--------2h3-3-----3h4--0~~~x--|-------2h3-3---------------| B:|--22h3-------22h3------0~~~x--|--22h3-------2h3-5-7/16\0--| RR L R L R RR L R L RR L R L R R L R R **Main Riff** C|-----------------------------|--------------------------------------------| G|---------------------------r-|--------------------------------------------| D|---------------------------e-|--------------------------------------------| A|---------------------------s-|--------------------------------------------| E|-------------3-----------3-t-|--------------------14-------------------14-| B|--22h3--22h3---22h3-22h3-----|--14.14h15-14.14h15----14.14h15-14.14h15----| RR L RR L R RR L RR L R R R L R R L R R R L R R L R Verse: This is the part that no one can get. It's actually pretty easy. What you do is rest your forearm on the low B string. Then, rest your lest index finger on the 2nd fret. Now, here's the trickey part. Slap the muted B TWICE with your right thumb, then hammer the B with your remaining fingers on your left hand really hard. Make sure you hammer hard enough to get the same sound as your right hand, but not so hard that you hammer the 3rd fret, and get a note out of it. Try this a few times, very slowly, then gain speed as you get more confident. Pretty soon, it will become second nature, and you will do it with no problem at all. If you could only see how he does it, you'd probably be kicking yourself in the head. It's one of those things where you need to see it to belive it. Anyhow... "My name is Mud......" Les does some slides here and there. For the Pork Soda version, that last part where Les and Herb are doing that "Mud" groove together really fast, play this: C|---------------------------------| G|---------------------------------| D|---------------------------------| A|---------------------------------| E|---------------------------------| B|--22h3-22h3-22h3-22h3-22h3-22h3--| RR L RR L RR L RR L RR L RR L Through the whole thing, LIGHTLY press the frets, just enough to get the note value. Since Les plays this on a fretless, he probably has no problem with this. You want it to sound as "punchey" as possible. More of a muted sound. You've gotta have a FAST thumb, and a lot of stamina to keep it up.

This is what I play on My Name is Mud. Your tabs seem quite different, but to me it sounds just like the real thing to me. And it can be played on a four-string, too. It's not easy as you need a good left-hand-hammer-on-technique for it. Get your right hand to the traditional slap position. Put your small finger on the 12th fret of the d-string and your middle finger on the tenth fret of the E-string, your index finger should rest on the ninth fret of the A-string. The notes should be MUTED by not pressing the strings onto the frets too much to get that percussive sound. Now pluck (or pop) the muted "D" on the d-string and instantly preform a "left hand hammer on", which means: raise your ring and middle finger and drop them onto the strings quick, muting them and creating a percussive sound. Make sure you drop your middle finger on the "D", 10th fret, E-string. Your thumb should now instantly drop and preform a slap onto the E-string, a muted low "D" should sound. MAKE SURE YOUR LITTLE AND INDEX FINGER STAY IN THEIR POSITIONS! Written in In tabulature this trick looks like this: Fig. 1 G-------(10)-----(10)--- D-----12(10)---12(10)--- and so on... A-------(10)-----(10)--- E-------(10)10---(10)10- P LH S P LH S P- Pluck the string LH-drop use the fingers of your left hand (in this case the middle and ring-finger to get a muted, percussive sound. S- Slap the muted E-string. Sounds confusing? Try it, till you get the hang of it. Pop, left hand hammer on, slap. Pop, left hand hammer on, slap...Sounds like triplets? (you know, like "TakataTakataTakata"?) well done, you're getting close! You can do it really fast now? You got rid of these darn harmonics that always sound when they aren't supposed to sound? Great. Now try my tab version of the intro riff of My Name is Mud. Fig.2 G-------(10)-----(10)-----(10)-----(10)-----(10)-----(10)------------ D-----12(10)---12(10)-----(10)---12(10)---12(10)-----(10)------------ A-------(10)-----(10)---09(10)-----(10)-----(10)---09(10)------------ E-------(10)10---(10)10---(10)10---(10)10---(10)10---(10)10---------- Count:1 2 3 4... There is an additional difficulty here: the plucked note varies. First itssss the high D on the D string, then youvvvve got to pluck the F# on the A string and back (if you can, bend the F# note slightly out of tune, if you arentttt a fretless user.) Hard work for your left and right hand, though. You shouldntttt boost the treble too much so it sounds really FAT. A compressor also has a nice effect, making the percussive notes sound more equally loud and PUNCHY. The regularily fingered parts shouldntttt be much of a problem. however, for the verses, you need a thinner sound. So try this tab. G-----07(05)---07(05)---07(05)---07(05)---07(05)---07(05)--- D-------(05)-----(05)-----(05)-----(05)-----(05)-----(05)--- A-------(05)05---(05)05---(05)05---(05)05---(05)05---(05)05- E-----xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx- P LH S P LH S P LH S P LH S P LH S P LH S Count:1 2 3 4... These are the same notes (except there are only octaves and no thirds, wo needs thirds anyway), played on the a,d and g string and this, of course, sounds thinner and more twangy. Try to slap in the bridge position to get a even more twangy sound. But one thing is hard here: muting the low E string, if it sounds, the effect is ruined. Try muting it with your palm and avoid hitting it with your left-hand-hammer-ons. Again, I left out the part Les plays during Ler's solo, because it's quite easy. For the cool outro-part, of course, play Fig.1, and replace the thirds by octaves.

(No relation to the Slappin' Cap'n'.) I've actually notated the rhythm, so all you Midi Freaks can go make a.Mid file of this song. Each "-" is a 32nd note, so 2 "-" equals 16th note, 4 "-" equals 8th note, etc. Not a hard song to play if you understand that Les doesn't slap each note. Les is a "sinister exaggerator" when it comes to bass playing. The only part that's slapped fast is the verse and outro riff(the one where you mute a lot). You also don't need a six string bass to play this. Just a four string tuned B-E-A-D or a five string tuned B-E-A-D-G. The tab is pretty obvious so I'll let you figure out where to put what. 200 quarter notes per minute. Here is another way of the playing My Name is Mud. M teacher showed me and its darn hard to get sounding good. The whole song except for the intro is based on a slap, hammer and pop combination. In my opinion, you need at least a five string to get the 'lumpy'sound that Les gets. Here it is: S - slap with thumb h - hammer with fretting fingers P - pop with right hand C|----------| G|----------| D|----------| A|---h5-5---| E|----------| B|-3--------| S P 'Ta ka ta' Note: 'ta ka ta' denotes a triplet This little combo is a triplet, and you have to hammer the high D damn hard to get a decent note value out of it. The emphasis is on the triplet, like Galactic Pretzel said in his tab, you have to get the verse sounding like "TakataTakataTakata." The verse riff is also muted with the right arm hanging over the strings, so in actual fact, you're slapping and popping up on the fret board. The verse riff sounds something like this: C|---------------------------------------------| G|---------------------------------------------| D|---------------------------------------------| A|---h5-5-----h5-5------------h5-5-----h5-5----| E|---------------------------------------------| B|-3--------3-------3-------3--------3-------3-| S P S P S S P S P S 'Ta ka ta Ta ka ta Ta Ta ka ta Ta ka ta Ta' The chorus is the same phrase with no muting of the arm. OK, there is also the parts where the bass is sliding up and down octaves, this is merely a variation on the triplet. All you do is play the above phrase once, then slide up to the 15th fret and play the phrase again, then slide back down. Then there is the outro, which again is based on the triplet: C|------------------------------------------------| G|------------------------------------------------| D|------------------------------------------------| A|---h5-5-----h5-5-----h5-5-----h5-5-----h5-5-----| E|------------------------------------------------| B|-3--------3--------3--------3--------3--------3-| S P S P S P S P S P S 'Ta ka ta Ta ka ta Ta ka ta Ta ka ta Ta ka ta Ta'
