Compilation and soundtrack (T) reviews

The Best of Metal

Among the three recent compilations I got from CMC International, this is the best. As many might know, CMC International is famous for signing bands from the 70s and 80s who were popular but now only appeal to a market niche. This album showcases the fire left in many of these bands. Some of the best music here is by artists like Iron Maiden, Motörhead, Overkill, Deep Purple, and Bruce Dickinson. However, I feel the selections could've been better chosen (for example, Iron Maiden's Sign of the Cross and Deep Purple's Soon Forgotten would've made for a better release). Worth investing in, if you're curious about what these bands have to offer today.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (soundtrack)

Tim Burton's classic for eternal preservation---as must have for any fan of movie sound tracks or musicals. The music is by Danny Elfman, who does an excellent job of bringing out the charisma in the well-meaning Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King, who decides to take over Christmas in a voyage of self-discovery.

"Kidnap the Sandy Claws, chop him into bits.
Mr. Oogie Boogie is sure to get this kicks.
Kidnap the Sandy Claws, see what we will see.
Lock him in a cage and then, throw away the key."
---Lock, Shock, and Barrel in The Nightmare before Christmas

Thrash and Burn... The Metal Alternative

This is another Risky Business collection of very cool thrash tunes, including the blazing Dance of the Dead by Corrosion of Conformity, Prove you Wrong by Prong (not their best effort), Chains by Collision, and Sugar ain't so Sweet by Mind Funk. Mother Love Bone sucks on this, even with the Freddie Mercury reference.

Tooth and Nail Records Sampler Volume 3

This is a sampler from Tooth and Nail Records with 18 songs from their roster. Some of the artists I've reviewed before, and I've provided links to the reviews from this review. Given the entire set of songs (keeping in mind that only one track for each artist is given), I'd say the highlights of this release are Morella's Forest, a punk rock band with some decent guitar work, Klank, who sounds like a cross between Fear Factory and White Zombie, The Supertones, a progressive-sounding ska band, and Joy Electric, a synth-based band reminscent of Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream. The striking thing about this label is the number of Green Day clones (Ghoti Hook, MxPX, Value-Pac) that are on it.
